Winter on the ranch is a somewhat slower time as there’s not a lot you can do when the ground is full of snow and ice. We generally feeds cows, do some basic maintenance on equipment and if we have time we work with some horses.
We have a big enough barn that we can set up a make shift round corral in and it at least gets us inside and out of the elements. You can’t really ride any of the horses in the barn because the beams are too low and you’ll end up hitting your head on them, especially if a horse goes to bucking with you. However, we can do a lot of ground work and get the horses used to the saddle, bridle and ropes. These pictures are of one of the cowboys doing such work with one of the ranch horses.

Really appreciate your behind the scenes posts. Looking forward to more.
I really injoy the ranch activities from your unique prespective.
Your photography and video are awesome. So much of photography is being in the right place at the right time. Keep up the good work!!

Wow! This is a great post. I love that you shared these beautiful images. I cannot wait to go on my winter vacation and see these beautiful creatures in the snow. I was wondering if there are any shelters or stables I could help out at in Colorado. I just found vacation rentals in Vail, and can’t wait to go. Thanks for inspiring me.
Hi Giana – Thanks for the kind words, and we agree – Lennie is a wonderful photographer! As for your question, our office is in Colorado, but the Meyer Ranch (where Lennie takes photos) is located in Montana. We did a quick search, though, and found a few nice places around Vail you could check out:
